Learn How Propane Smells

Propane is unique, in that it has no natural odor, so one is added to it so a leak can be detected. It will typically smell like rotten eggs, a skunk, or even a dead animal. If you think you’re smelling propane gas in your home or business, or anywhere on your property, please follow the steps below as soon as you possibly can.

If You Think You Smell Propane in Your Home

  1. NO SPARKS OR FLAMES. Make sure you immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames in your vicinity. Do not turn on lights, appliances, telephones, or even cell phones. Sparks or flames caused by these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.
  2. LEAVE THE AREA ASAP. Make sure that you get absolutely everyone out of the building or area where you suspect propane gas is leaking.
  3. TURN OFF THE PROPANE GAS. Make sure you turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank, only if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).
  4. REPORT THE LEAK IMMEDIATELY. At a safe distance, from either a neighbor’s home or another building away from the gas leak, call Jones Propane right away. If you can’t reach us, be sure to call 911 or your local fire department as soon as possible.
  5. DO NOT RETURN TO THE AREA until Jones Propane, emergency services, or a qualified service technician let’s you know that it is safe to do so.
  6. GET YOUR SYSTEM SERVICED. Before you even consider trying to use any of your propane appliances, a qualified service technician must check your entire system to make sure that it is leak-free.
